Extremely detailed images of the sun have been captured by the Inouye telescope in Hawaii. The telescope’s 30km resolution is more than twice that of the next best solar observatories. You can see the image below. The sun presents itself almost like a bee-built honeycomb structure.
Each of these little sections is about the size of France. Super-heated plasma leaps into the air and is at almost 6,000C – these are seen as bright spots at the centre of each section. The darker areas show where cooling plasma falls down back into the sun.
The Inouye Solar Telescope is located on the top of Mount Haleakala on Maui in Hawaii. It was only completed this year – 2020 – and is the world’s largest Solar Telescope with a 4-meter aperture.
